Viet Nam and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) sign important bilateral Treaties in the field of criminal justice

During the period from December 01st to 03rd, 2023, Prime Minister of Viet Nam, Mr. Pham Minh Chinh attended The World Climate Action Summit (WCAS) within the framework of the United Nations Climate Change Conference – COP 28 in UAE.

On December 02nd, 2023, in Dubai, on the occasion of the 52nd anniversary of UAE National Day (December 02nd, 1971 - December 2nd, 2023), on behalf of the State of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, the Supreme People's Procuracy and the Ministry of Public Security took turns to sign the Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters, the Treaty on Extradition and the Treaty on Transfer of Sentenced Persons between the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam and the United Arab Emirates with the UAE Ministry of Justice.

Overview of the metting

Previously, the high-level delegation of the Supreme People's Procuracy of Viet Nam, led by Mr. Nguyen Huy Tien, Permanent Deputy Prosecutor General and the high-level delegation of the Ministry of Public Security of Viet Nam, led by Major General Le Van Tuyen, Deputy Minister held a meeting with the delegation of the Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the UAE led by Mr. Abdullah bin Sultan bin Awad Al Nuaimi, Minister of Justice of the UAE.

At the meeting, the two parties affirmed the meaning and importance of signing these Treaties. This will be a direct, complete, and important legal framework for the two countries' criminal justice agencies to give each other support to effectively fight all types of crimes, especially crimes with transnational organization. The Treaties will be the legal basis to better protect the legitimate rights and interests of organizations and citizens of each country.

At the same time, both sides agreed to attach great importance to Viet Nam's business trip to the UAE this time; believing this will be an important milestone and breakthrough for the cooperation between the Supreme People's Procuracy, the Ministry of Public Security of Viet Nam and the UAE Ministry of Justice in particular and between the two countries in general in the field of international criminal justice and crime prevention. Thereby, contributing to promoting the cooperative relationship between Vietnam and the UAE to continue to develop strongly, contributing to peace and security in the region and the world.

At the end of the meeting, authorized by the State of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam and the State of the UAE, Mr. Abdullah bin Sultan bin Awad Al Nuaimi, Minister of Justice of UAE and Mr. Nguyen Huy Tien, Permanent Deputy Prosecutor General of Viet Nam signed the Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters between the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam and the United Arab Emirates; and Major General Le Van Tuyen, Deputy Minister of Public Security of Viet Nam, signed the Treaty on Extradition and the Treaty on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons between the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam and the United Arab Emirates

The signing of the above bilateral Treaties with the UAE demonstrates the determination of the State of Vietnam in implementing international obligations and commitments in the field of criminal justice. At the same time, the signing of these Treaties also has special meaning, marking the 30th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries (August 1, 1993 - August 1, 2023); thereby, contributing to consolidating and building an increasingly sustainable and profound relationship in all fields of cooperation between Viet Nam and the UAE.
