From July 23rd to July 28th, 2023, the President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, Mr. Vo Van Thuong and his wife paid an official visit to the Republic of Austria, paid a state visit to the Republic of Italy and paid a visit to the Vatican City. The Deputy Prosecutor General of the Supreme People's Procuracy of Viet Nam, Mr. Nguyen Quang Dung joined the delegation accompanying the President.
Within the framework of the visit, the Deputy Prosecutor General of the Supreme People's Procuracy of Viet Nam, Mr. Nguyen Quang Dung participated in official activities according to the working schedule of the President; he also represented Viet Nam to handing over the Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters between the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam and the Republic of Italy.
At 2pm (local time) on July 26th, 2023, at the headquarters of the Prime Minister's Office of Italy, in the presence of the President of Viet Nam, Mr. Vo Van Thuong and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Italy, Ms. Giorgia Meloni, on behalf of the two Countries, the Deputy Prosecutor General of the Supreme People's Procuracy of Viet Nam, Mr. Nguyen Quang Dung and the Deputy Minister of Justice of Italy, Mr. Andrea Delmastro Delle Vedove, exchanged the Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters between the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam and the Republic of Italy.
The Treaty consists of a Preamble and 24 articles, detailing the competence, order and procedures for carrying out mutual legal assistance in criminal matters between the competent authorities of the two countries. After being ratified, The Treaty will be the legal framework directly applied in the process of making, sending and implementing requests for mutual legal assistance in criminal matters between competent authorities of Viet Nam and Italy, thereby contributing to the timely, effective and legal settlement of criminal cases involving foreign elements of the two countries. The Treaty will be a legal tool to better protect the legitimate rights and interests of the citizens of each country.

The exchange of the Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters between Viet Nam and Italy during this high-level visit is an important event on the occasion of the Viet Nam – Italy Year of Friendship 2023, marking the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations (March 23rd, 1973 – March 23rd, 2023) and the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the strategic partnership (January 21st, 2013 – January 21st, 2023) between the two countries, contributing to consolidating and developing the good cooperative relationship between Viet Nam and Italy in a comprehensive and sustainable manner.
